@pmarin I remember those commercials. It was hilarious when he was a guest on Late Night with David Letterman. Dave gave him a hard time about the “corinthian leather.”
@actionPacked What if they made a site which just shipped out random amounts of pasta to you or your unsuspecting friends? Wouldn’t that be wild? Somebody should look into that.
Meh, you can get decent full leather grain duffels at a bit higher price but at least they will be completely made of leather and not the leather-canvas Frankenstein’s monster that this is. That said, these do look well-constructed.
If these are actually full grain leather, then these are good prices for a top of the line leather product. If they’re just genuine leather, then they’re not so special. I’m pretty sure if it’s not actually marked ‘full grain’ on the label, it’s not full grain.
As someone who works with leather as a hobby, full grain and top grain leather are the two highest grades of leather you can buy. Full grain is just that…the full top of the skin and not sanded lightly to remove surface imperfections, while top grain is lightly sanded before receiving dye and/or finish.
Thickness and how leather it is tanned and finished affects durability and longevity as well (chrome tanned, natural veg tanned, or a combination of both sometimes), but no matter the tannage, your best bet when buying leather is to go for full or top grain.
Anything marked ‘genuine leather’ is almost always crap. Glue and leather bits mixed together and formed into sheets. Yuck.
Sorry for my leather Ted Talk, lol! I’m passionate about real leather and I enjoy educating folks about its benefits over the fake stuff.
If I could get clarification that these are indeed full grain, then even as a leather crafter I still may pick one of these up. It’s cheaper than my cost in materials and time to make these for sure. (But with the number of yet unused leather hides in my basement, I think my husband would be less than thrilled if I did, lol!)
@k4evryng
I’m not coming from a knowledgeable place at all on leather.
Is the headline saying “full grain leather” but the description saying “genuine leather” what gives a bit of pause? I’m also a little hesitant based on the “nylon accents” which just seem like cost cutting, not what would be present on a $300+ item.
Do you think we can rely on the headline of “full grain leather” being the real situation? Seems like they’d repeat that in the description, instead of “genuine leather,” but it could be a bad copywriter? (or AI slop?)
FWIW, the Boconi website calls it “soft geniune leather” or “genuine leather”. Only the duffle has a mention of “soft full grain leather” on their description.
@k4evryng “But with the number of yet unused leather hides in my basement”
I’m a bit creeped out by the image I created in my mind. Not your fault.
“It puts the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again.”
@k4evryng The Baconi website calls the backpack and duffel both “genuine leather,” so I’m not sure where the full grain leather headline came from. It caught my eye, too!
@Christo196 yes, that’s what made me look further as well. After looking at the Buconi site, (and @Troy ‘s clarification), it looks like the duffle is indeed full grain, while the backpack is genuine leather.
@accelerator@pmarin I agree! That definitely sounded creepy, lol! Basement and skin should never be used in the same paragraph proximity.
But I can’t apologize for having it…real leather is just so freaking cool to me. If taken care of, it lasts so much longer than any plastic or fake leather, and is so much more beautiful. (I’m not fan of how we get it, but as a natural by product of the beef industry, I also hate that sooo much of it goes to waste when it could be used).
@k4evryng I have several of Boconi’s products and they’re some of the best leather products I’ve seen. Well-designed and made. Their website and marketing just don’t do justice. Their backpacks are totally worth their MSRP price, let alone $50 here. I ordered 3!
@customers To clear up confusion on the leather grade: We have pulled samples and confirmed that the backpack states “Genuine Leather” on the tag. As for the duffel, the manufacturer states “Full Grain” and the tags confirm that these have RFID protection as well. As always, you are welcome to visit Your Orders Page to cancel if you need.
I have a Boconi laptop briefcase that I bought over 20 years ago, and it’s still in amazing condition. So when I learned Meh was selling their backpacks, I had to pick up three!
FYI, Boconi is an American company that makes some of the finest leather products, period. No cheap knockoffs or obvious cost-cutting measures here.
The hybrid material is actually a brilliant, functional design. The non-leather sections are placed exactly where leather would normally experience the most wear or rub against your business attire, making the bag both more durable and more practical. E.G. I hated my previous bag leaving leather marks on my khaki pants!
If I could offer Boconi one piece of advice, it would be to hire an experienced digital marketing professional. Their current marketing—or lack thereof—simply doesn’t do justice to the exceptional quality of their products.

The look of synthetic leather for the price of real leather!
Nice looking, but…
“We’re not worthy! We’re not worthy!”

EDIT that actually looks pretty comfy. Not ideal for a car seat probably. I want to take a nap now! Bedtime; see you tomorrow.
@pmarin I remember those commercials. It was hilarious when he was a guest on Late Night with David Letterman. Dave gave him a hard time about the “corinthian leather.”
@pmarin
Had to look really close at that inset picture. At first I thought it was a pickup truck!!
@pmarin
@pmarin my Dad had an '85 New Yorker. it really was a sofa and 2 loveseats on 4 wheels. SUper plush.
also had the synthesized voice alert option.
“A door is a jar.”
@pmarin @visioneer_one Dad joke:
Q. When is a door a jar?
A. When there’s jamb inside.
@phendrick @pmarin @visioneer_one
I find Dad jokes about doors to be unhinged.
@mehcuda67 @pmarin @visioneer_one Lol
I’d buy this if the backpack came full of pasta.
@actionPacked What if they made a site which just shipped out random amounts of pasta to you or your unsuspecting friends? Wouldn’t that be wild? Somebody should look into that.
@ciabelle alas…. If only! Then maybe Meh could team up with them, and fill leather backpacks and duffle bags with all sorts of pasta!
Way too small for what I need!
@mycya4me
@mycya4me @shahnm
@shahnm My question is way are you talking about yourself??
I look forward to when these are offered at $29.99

@accelerator @k4evryng getting a bit of a Silence of the Lambs vibe here…

@mediocrebot 100% pasture approved!

@karlkatx thank you…you just convinced me to get the duffle, lol!
I will have to come up with an explanation as to why I bought one when I could easily make it though.

I’d consider these but I have a rule, birthed from decades of sadness, that one should avoid things with plastic or nylon zippers.
@MWJohnson YKK or bust!
The only exception is the ones made to be (semi-?)waterproof; usually nylon.
My old bag is expensive to maintain. I would like to have a new, stylish bag, but it would cost me half my stuff.
Disappointed to not see a safety vest. PPPE (Personal Pasta Protective Equipment) is very rare and exclusive.

Careful, someone just got like 50 years in prison in Texas on terrorism charges for having one of these backpacks at an ICE protest.
The movie reference is obviously “Arrival”.
Is today’s icon a leather sack to put that highly-questionable NSFW icon from yesterday in?

So, the title/headline is misleading because there’s no mention of any RFID-protection in the detail of the duffle AND it’s $30 more.
That said, given the lack of a sternal strap and hip belt, the backpack is a hard pass too.
