@PooltoyWolf Wasn’t long ago you could get a really nice Seiko 5 Sports automatic mechanical dive watch for $150 on the Asian gray market. They weren’t fakes either. I almost bought one and then my wife got me a very nice Citizen. I’ll say it again: she’s the best.

@PooltoyWolf @tweezak I kind of had the same path with getting a Seiko 5 and then a Citizen dive watch.The second hand isn’t as interesting to watch but it’s accurate and will easily outlast me.

@dpease @PooltoyWolf @tweezak I pretty much always pull of the default strap and thread a nylon one through, even on dressier stuff. It’s comfier and James Bond movies have made it so that it’s perceived as still looking okay.

@brennyn @dpease @PooltoyWolf Mechanical is a standard wind watch. Automatic and automatic mechanical refer to auto wind. Invicta has made automatics for years. My brother has one that is specifically antimagnetic because he’s a welder. I wish they had sapphire crystals but that would drive the price way up.

@dpease @PooltoyWolf @tweezak My Invitcta autos have all treated me well. One ran kind of slow but it was nothing a bonk didn’t fix.

@brennyn @dpease @tweezak Mechanical = anything with a mechanical movement (wheels, pivots, arbors, the works), automatic wind or not! I love any form of watch that is more interesting than a quartz module.

@brennyn @dpease @tweezak But, I have no interest in spending tons of money. I like hand-me-downs, thrift finds, and cheap stuff.

@brennyn @dpease @PooltoyWolf I like the classics too but for daily wear I want something basically waterproof that I will never have to break the seal on that keeps decent time. That’s a lot to ask from a thrifty watch.
$113 is in my price range for a watch that is a known quantity.

@werehatrack I see this brand watch at TJMaxx frequently usually for $22-35. I believe I got one as a gift a few years back. The most these watches can take is a light sprinkle of water.
You’re right to trust your gut. This should be an easy pass.

@IAMIS I used to use a watch and basically stopped when we got pagers from work that were always clipped to my pants or by my bed, and they showed the time. Then eventually phones. Now everything gets time signals, even the car which is networked in. But now I often use a smart watch because I can walk around the house without my phone since I can answer the watch, plus it scolds me constantly for sitting on my butt instead of moving!

@IAMIS @pmarin I know my phone shows the time, but it’s even less effort to look at my wrist than to pull out or locate my phone. (Fitbit that shows the time.)

@pmarin In 2016 I was in Singapore on business and went to this big mall place with my host. Just inside the front door in massive cases were hundreds of watches crammed in. Lots of glitz but I have no idea what they really were.
The engineers I was working with were really impressed by the $550 Citizen my wife had bought me. I know it’s a very nice watch but I never thought about it being all that special.
