I went almost every year when I was younger and I AM NOT a red neck by any means. It was just fun to go to, so it became a tradition.
Plus as a little kid you can yell and scream as loud as you want and it’s not gonna bother anyone. My friends parents would take us and get us all hoped up on sugar, let scream our brains out while they drank beer. Then the next day (and rest of that night) we were pretty chill bc we were wore out.
I was part of a monster jam show years ago. I worked part time at a hobby shop and we got invited to display and run our R/C trucks on the track before the show. Other than that, monster truck shows to me get a little monotonous. You can only see a truck jump so many times.
I have inadvertently been next to an event because the track is next to a TJ Maxx I frequent. I can sort of see what’s going on and I can certainly hear it because it’s very loud.
You gotta go at least once if you have a kid. To be honest it’s awesome the first 15 minutes, and then if you didn’t bring earplugs you just want to leave!
SWMBO bought tickets from my (then 12-year-old) nephew for Christmas years ago and we took him and one of his buddies. It’s one of those things that I was not terribly interested in but thought he would enjoy. As it turns out the experience was ‘memorable’. It’s something I wouldn’t do again on a regular basis, but fun at the time, especially accompanied by a couple of 12-year-old males!
Pro tip: wear hearing protection.
A former coworker ended up with an extra ticket quite a few years ago. She warned me ahead of time that her two (single digit aged) boys would probably be all over me during the event. I am a motorsports fan (mostly drag racing) so the noise, which there was plenty, didn’t bother me but the fumes were pretty potent as it was an indoor facility where the event was being held. The kidlets liked having “Uncle” Todd at the event, and of course I had to spoil them a bit, but I actually did have a lot of fun. That said, I’ve never been to another one, even though I’ve had many events that I could have attended. (Those kids are probably of the age that they could potentially have kids of their own now! Maybe Uncle Todd should find out )

In our late teens/early twenties, my friends and I would take our 4x4s out and explore. Whoever got the muddiest was the winner. So I’ve never had much interest in watching staged performances in an arena.

Well, in fairness, it was a U.S. release film also. A cult classic many don’t know about. Big semi trucks rebel for some reason I don’t recall, and hold a bunch of drivers and tourists hostage in a truck stop restaurant. I need to dig it up again.
But, oui, that was a French poster. When I saw it I liked it so let it stand with la version Francaise.
Edit forgot it had Emilio Esteves, and music by AC/DC. Now I must find it!

(And BTW, my all-time favorite video adaptation of an SK book was/is the TV miniseries of The Stand, with Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwald. The Shining with Jack Nicholson is a close second)
When I was young, about 10 years old, I attended a tractor pull competition back in rural farm town Missouri. The tractors engage in a tug of war to see who’s the strongest. One of the tractors blew up right in front of the bleachers. Pieces of tractor flew into the crowd and came raining down on the metal roof (thank God) covering the bleachers. Many people, including children, were critically injured. There was blood everywhere and people screaming and crying. My brother and I had begged our Dad to let us sit down on the front row but he would not allow it, citing the loud noises of the tractors. Anyway, although that was then and this is now, I just don’t find watching monster trucks very appealing.
@accelerator Eek, that sounds terrible. NASCAR and F1 tracks now have safety fences and nets, hopefully to catch cars or parts of them in crashes. But there had been some serious harm to the spectators before that. But engine explosions tend to be rare and contained within the bodywork, unlike the tractor-pull type which sounds more like a drag strip engine. And for F1, it’s hard to get much catastrophic damage from a 1.6l engine. Now a car going 200mph on the other hand, yes that could be bad.

I used to go just about every year (came right around my bday) from the time I was a kid till about 20. Then they tore down the Silverdome and built Little Caesars Arena and they charge fucking arm and a leg for tickets (bc WE have to pay for the new building, nice seats and other shit). I do want to take my 4 year old nephew, he likes the grave digger monster trucks I’ve gotten him. I’m sure he would like it.
@Star2236 I won tickets from a local TV station to an indoor event in an old sports arena. Glad I got to see it once, but not a big thing around here anyway. I think Gravedigger was the star attraction. This was almost 30 years ago.

I used to enjoy going to them; I got drawn in by getting into the SEMA shows in Las Vegas where those trucks (like the original Bigfoot and Bigfoot IV) were displayed and driven around. I might still enjoy the ones that don’t put other cars on the ground to get driven over and crushed; my recent experience has made me hate demolition derby with great passion, and that aspect of monster trucking has joined DD in the pit of evil.
