@Clumber@kjady@Pony Yes. I have had as many as 9, when my buddy I bottle fed starting at 10 days old died 3 weeks shy of 20 that leaves me with 4, ages 8-16.
I’m so sorry for your loss. I hate when that invoice arrives for all that semi-unconditional (we’re talking cats!) love. It’s still an absolute bargain, but damn does it hurt. It is never enough time.
We’re approaching invoice time with our 13½yo dog, Prim, who was born into my hands completely blue and with just a fluttery heartbeat. “NOT ON MY WATCH, LITTLE checks GIRL!” as I started the failing newborn routines and we got her back. So she’s been a constant friend since. 13 more years wouldn’t be enough. 26 more wouldn’t either.
@Clumber Yes they are such an important part of our lives. We know we will outlive them but it is still very hard when we do. I wish you strength when the time comes with Prim.
Squeaker is my buddy, my wfh co-worker. Ladybird, aka the princess of chaos was either an engineer or a demolition expert in a previous life. Every new thing in the house, you can see those tiny brain gears turning trying to figure out how to take it apart or destroy it. The true poster child of the we can’t have nice things.
BUT not with Thor. at least with me. I can rub him anywhere. (He was fixed before I got him- he is a rescue) Plus he is a indoor kitty, now about 4 years old!
In fact he will get up/ Jump into his spot on the bed, Meow & expect a full body rub, scratch. from the Tip of his Nose to his tail, I can even rub the pads on his paws, He has 5 toes on his front feet/ paws!
He also knows better than to batt at me with his claws out! he learned that lesson soon after he came here!
He also loves to be Brushed, I have the Kong Zoom Groom, with soft rubber fingers. It gets a lot of the loose fur off him so he don’t shed it all over the place!
Well now I have a bit of a crush on Thor! That’s awesome!
Our tuxedo kitten, Luci, still does the “rub my sweet fluffy belly… MWAHAHAH!” trap but has learned to keep her knives sheathed when springing that trap. She even bunny kicks without the blades extended.
@Clumber You are welcome to come & visit. But it will take a bit time for Thor to warm up to you. I am #1 in his world! even my neighbor which brought the Male Rescue kitty to me (they had called him Fetta, as when he passed gas… it was a rank smell, like Fetta cheese. But as I put him on a dry food diet that did not happen often & now rarely.)
she is #1 till Thor see me, he quickly demotes her to #2.
Some times I wonder if I should have named hime “Loki” for all the mischief he gets into.
Yes many time when he is tired of or don’t want what I am offering, he also bunny kicks pushed me away with no claws, he knows what happens if they come out. I become VERY Un Happy, My Voice get deep booming one, he knows he has made me Upset/ Mad! he don’t want that to happen.
FYI with his toys… his claws come out Picking up & throwing the toy around. I have to watch out!
We have 3.
Luci is the tuxedo kitten, thusly the scourge.
Adore is a senior grey cat with a very traumatic experience as a kitten being attacked by daycare children with rocks thrown at her and her littermates over 10ya. She’s never fully recovered her sense of safety or trust, so she’s a weird roommate.
Then there’s the white and orange (in a Turkish Van type of colouring) senior boy, Blitz, and usually he’s the best friend of everyone in the house especially our dogs, though he likes to get tf away from the girl cats sometimes.
@Kidsandliz@Kyeh Twenty-odd years ago, Lee’s eldest cat, Mina, was seen cavorting with her new-found friend that she’d met when Lee moved in with me. As soon as she realized that she’d been caught Being Playful, she bolted for her private windowsill behind the bookcase near Lee’s PC. I strolled over, announced that I had seen Mina in the act of playing with Fafhrd, and was immediately met with a loud cry from the windowsill which sounded for all the world like she was saying “WAS NOT!” We all lost it.
Freya considers herself The Ruler Of All Things. Spike thinks that’s cute, but doesn’t give a crap one way or the other. Squirrel wishes that Freya would go away. Weasel wants to be a friend. Kitsune just wants a lap, 24/7, but never stays for more than 10 minutes. In the back half of the house, Mamama is bouncy and vocal and Wants All The Scritch for about ten seconds, and then goes off to find mischief. Noodle has A Set Of Rituals and A Chosen Person. Elise (formally Fur Elise) knows she outweighs all the others, and pretty much ignores Noodle and Mamama. Elise likes to stretch out against my leg at night.
@werehatrack loved the name Für Elise. Cats here don’t understand the umlaut. I was thinking when I get new cats (or they get me more likely) I might go for Riesling and Gewurtztraminer. Riesling would be said with the hard rolled R as is appropriate. Nobody knows what to do with Gewurz.
Though those both sound more female, as gentle white wines, so if a male, might try Mourvèdre, which also can’t be pronounced.
@pmarin I could take an educated guess about Mourvèdre; the regularity of the irregularities of French pronunciation are fairly predictable, at least for Parisian. (Rule #1: Most of the time, the last phoneme in the word does not exist. Nobody knows where it went. It is a mystery.) (And the letter R is very soft in any event.) (Do not ask me how to pronounce the names of Scottish distilleries. That challenges sanity.)
@pmarin@werehatrack Learn Gaelic and you won’t have an issue. . And since you apparently know French you should have far less trouble learning Khmar (Cambodian) that I did as the transliteration of that language uses French pronunciation and I don’t know French.
20 years old this month! She just lies in her cage and sleeps most of the time. She likes to be petted for about a minute, then she’s off to her bed again. Come to think of it, she’s been that way most of her life. She was never social, unlike her sister (that I lost in June) who was everywhere ALL the time! I do miss my little Quita!
@Tadlem43 Lee’s cats both went past 20, though they were both frail when she moved in with me. Mina perked up when she met my orange cat, Fafhrd, and we were convinced that this was a large part of why she lived to be almost 25 (if memory serves, might have reached it.) Genevieve got to 23. A friend had one that lived to be 38; she was a tiny pure white cat with fur that never looked the least bit ruffled.
@werehatrack Wow…that’s amazing. Diamond is getting more and more frail…and has lost a LOT of weight, which is normal for old cats. I doubt that she’ll be around a lot longer. But then…Quita was always the busy one and thought she would outlive Diamond.
25 is insane! 38 is past incredible!!
Personally I’ve long suspected that SkyNet colludes with the planet’s cats, having misunderstood (or correctly interpreted?) them as the ruling class.
Hence our 3 cats, and the whispered consideration of a 4th as soon as we’ve finished moving into our new place. (Same location, just bringing a new home in replacing current, so all the torture of packing and unpacking our life but with the same view.)
Attention all humans owned by cats. While you may think it is the other way around, I have on good authority (my cats) that, in fact, we are wrong. They have us well trained and, of course, that makes a human uprising far less likely. And, yes, they own all our stuff too. So as much as you think to the contrary, it isn’t your bed, your chair, your computer keyboard… Get over it.
And, by the way, I want more of those expensive treats. And that really good wet cat food that you only occasionally buy. And keep the shades in your bedroom up at night so I can see out the window more easily. Oh yeah and I almost forgot. Those vulture feathers you found and brought home for me. I’ve wrecked them all and need more.
Two cats. Much better than dogs because when we go out of town for several days all we need to do is leave plenty of water and food ( time release feeder) and a clean liter box and they are fine. Try that with a dog.
Nix is my spoiled older gentlewomen who has retired from a life of crime and hijinks and just wants to nap on the furry blankets on the couch. She’s also recovering from three months of twice a day antibiotics which sometimes made her tummy upset (but the ear infection has been completely vanquished, so we’re calling it a win).
Pixel is my teenage boy chaos agent who wants to play and chase and rassle and eat and occasionally pause for chim scritches and a quick snug. He has all the markings of being a very snuggly little companion once he calms down. He is currently learning to do tricks in exchange for treats.
@Kyeh Neither of my current cats are really that fond of their very fine boxes. Nix will sniff around them a little but prefers napping on soft blankets on the couch. Pixel sometimes decides there is something inside a box that must be hunted or uses them for surprise ATTAK!!! But he does not like to feel like he’s confined or caged in any way. (He seems to have had a rough start to life and was likely dumped before he crawled up onto his foster mom’s patio.). Kota loved her very fine boxes and Nix followed Kota around and wanted to do whatever she did.
Attention all humans owned by cats we need to start a union and fight back.
We should start with:
This is MY chair.
This is MY bed.
This is MY pillow.
If you are well behaved and obedient I’ll let you use them too. Yeah that will go over well.
@Clumber@Kidsandliz worse is when you step on something wet and squishy in the morning. They say it’s healthy and normal for cats to do that sometimes. For the hoo-mans, not so much.
@Clumber@f00l I had two half on my chest (lying in bed) and two piled on those two - one on each. Had to see the screen to type and had to strategically place my arms to keep them off of the keyboard.
Bandit is in my lap as always.
Smokey’s upstairs in the loft someplace - probably on the love seat (I’d take a pic but then Bandit would have to get off my lap…)
Crossed the rainbow bridge. She was THE BEST EVER and I cannot bring myself to get another cat because I know it won’t be the same at all. So now we have a dog that I am not fond of but my daughter adores.
@cbilyak sorry to hear. Keeping the daughter happy is important too. I lost my buddy a few years ago. I will post more later. Some tempting adoption opportunities have come up but I was considering international travel again so wanted to wait.
EDIT I did end up with a second cat (the one I mentioned). As you say not the same at all. Earlier was a female “runt of the litter”. Tiny and cute. This guy was big and burly, at least he acted like it. But great in his annoying own way and we loved each other I think. So try another adoption, you may be surprised and happy eventually.
@cbilyak You won’t be replacing her… rather you will be bringing a different little life into your world who will bring you pleasure and love… and occasionally tears as your new little one makes you think of/does something that reminds you of the one you lost.
@IWUJackson my neighbor takes care of a few random cats here. They prefer to be outside. She has a heated outdoor shelter for them in Winter. We don’t know how or why they got here. My adoption above (many years ago) was one of them. We still have orangecat and greycat, as I call them.
Oh here they are.
A cat wanted to adopt me in in Oklahoma. It was a semi-abandoned MOTel with camping places in back.( Long story how I ended up there for a week) I think the cat knew I was a cat person in need of a cat. A second cat (brother, maybe) was more cautious and was probably saying stay away from that dude. Here they were outside my screen door one morning.
This was the MOT.
It was a fun weird week. People offered me cats, food, and other substances. I got my truck repaired and sadly left without any cats, and I still kind-of regret that. The little one was so cute and purry. I think the other one would have come around eventually.
All six of them are a combination of all of the above.
@kjady Same, except we only have five.
@kjady @Pony
The Cat Distribution Central Control has taken note.
@kjady Ditto, but we have eight. (And as for the “I don’t have a cat” answer, append “the cat has me” and it’s accurate.)
@Clumber @kjady @Pony Yes. I have had as many as 9, when my buddy I bottle fed starting at 10 days old died 3 weeks shy of 20 that leaves me with 4, ages 8-16.

They are the fertilizers of my yard and garden. And my back deck.
A BIG PUSSY!!

Which one?
@tweezak That one, over there.
My itty bitty fuzzy wuzzle!
You can see who is boss! Of course demanding a belly rub!
[1]:
@mycya4me

DANGER! DANGER! KITTY BELLYRUBS, while soooo soft and sweet, ARE OFTEN TRAPS ENGAGING ALL 4 MURDER MITTENS!
@Clumber Yes that is so with many Cats,
BUT not with Thor. at least with me. I can rub him anywhere. (He was fixed before I got him- he is a rescue) Plus he is a indoor kitty, now about 4 years old!

Tax :

She’d like to be the boss, but hasn’t quite achieved that status so far.
@Kyeh Clearly she has some work to do to finish training you. Has she written you up yet for not getting with the program?
@Kidsandliz She complains a lot!
She sometimes says “Waaaah” and it sounds like a cartoon baby’s cry. Cracks me up!
@Kidsandliz @Kyeh Twenty-odd years ago, Lee’s eldest cat, Mina, was seen cavorting with her new-found friend that she’d met when Lee moved in with me. The cat belongs to my wife. I am required to keep it alive when she goes on trips
@rustyh3 And you have absolutely never been documented scritching the cat while it purrs on the seat next to you.
Keep the cat happy. You may need a companion when the aliens arrive.
@rustyh3 @werehatrack

@Kidsandliz Here’s the image you requested for “cats ruling the humans they own”
@Kidsandliz @mediocrebot And Bastet said “But lo! humans know their place, and it is good.”
Two cats. Much better than dogs because when we go out of town for several days all we need to do is leave plenty of water and food ( time release feeder) and a clean liter box and they are fine. Try that with a dog.

We always made it work with our dogs, but they lived outside on a fenced one acre piece of property, so…

@Clumber Guess why I am posting at this hour of the morning.
@Kidsandliz

@Clumber @Kidsandliz
Hope you scritcued them and fed them first.
Priorities!
@Clumber @f00l I had two half on my chest (lying in bed) and two piled on those two - one on each. Had to see the screen to type and had to strategically place my arms to keep them off of the keyboard.

Not actually our cat. Not the immediate neighbors cat, but we feed her. And my daughter loves her, so maybe ours-ish?

@chienfou
Crap… This was supposed to be appended as a reply to the above post from @pmarin…
