These appear to be the kind that dump water past the grounds at first in case you pour a cup before brewing is done so you don’t get ultra strong coffee. I don’t care for that feature. If I want watered down coffee I’ll do it myself.
I still like the Motif you sold me in 2020. It is only 8 6oz cups. But on the days i drink coffee I’ll have a ~14 oz mug for breakfast. Fill the contigo you also sold me. Top it off between meetings.
The carafe style of coffee pot feels so much better than having that burner going all day.
This is extremely specific because work from home and I’m going to drink that pot all day. If you’re gonna drink it at breakfast/go to work with your mug. Meh. Probably no need for a carafe
@unksol I still have the Motif too and use it everyday. Yup the carafe is a way better option. Yall should just bring the Motif back, I burned the top of the pour over basket in the dishwasher and can not find a replacement.

I mean if it was on meh it was being cleared out/discontinued so no parts. Guessing bottom rack and heat element? Based on where the filter sits in mine with two scoops of coffee… I would not care unless it leaked. I might shave the burned/melted part down to level
@unksol Motif! Best coffee maker I’ve ever owned. HOT COFFEE! I got worried about it breaking so I searched & bought another off ebay for $70. After it past testing I put it away as the back-up.
@Joedetroit it does produce hot coffee even when it’s whining about needing descaled. Takes a lot of vinegar flushes to go away. But that’s also location specific.
I wouldn’t buy a back up but you like what you like.
It did stop working once and I took it apart but. There’s not much in there obviously. It just heats water. I didn’t see anything obviously wrong. Left my upside down for a bit before I got around to putting it back together and it was working
@unksol I’m unfamiliar with Motif but yeah the heating plate on those coffee pots is a hassle if you can’t shut it off. Coffee tastes like crap if you keep it hot for too long. Better to let it cool down, and even keep it in the fridge if you want to save it for later. Then re-heat it in the microwave when you want to drink it.

I Love the Motif! I have 2, because my Mom gave me hers back. I like the pour over feature so it pre-saturates and I won’t use another glass carafe, I like the thermos. Plus the heating element tends to burn coffee after awhile, and I am not averse to nuking mine… Waste not want not And Yes, I have many Thermos type cups to take with if I choose…

I have a Motif clone that is pretty good and was much cheaper. Maybe from here or The other site? The key is right brew temp and pre-infusion setting. But I usually use an espresso maker and hate to admit I’m mostly on Nespresso-style pods because of small machine and convenience. If you get good pods from a variety of sources, it’s pretty good. But at all costs stay away from cheap plastic ones sold by some stores.

@UncleMel if you are going to do auto-drip coffee, it’s for sure the way to go. As I said I have a “clone” that is also pretty good at 1/2 the price.
But I’m mostly on espresso now. Reminds me I have an unopened box of espresso maker on my front porch I should go get. (Safe neighborhood not too worried about porch pirates here. Helps to have vigilant and probably well-armed neighbors. Not to mention the guard cats)

I was sick of my areopress at the time due to volume of coffee I consume in a day. And needed a coffee maker. There’s nothing magical about it. It does have a presoak thing but that just means it dumps some hot water on and then waits a minute.
There’s NOT a significant difference over a normal drip machine for me. Other than the carafe, because I’m at home drinking it all day. Other coffee makers have those. If you’re just making coffee in the morning for breakfast and filling your insulated cup to go to work. Or multiple people are finishing the pot. The carafe is Entirely unnecessary.
Its just better than leaving it on a hotplate all day slowly burning. Also only works because it’s just me. If there was a coffee drinking wife. It would only be two of three cups and have to make more.
@unksol Wow, great deal. I looked preliminary on eBay and found it over $100 bucks. Good point on the carafe feature. I work from home and would probably benefit from it, though it’s hard to beat $15 bucks!

The presoak is kinda a gimmick to me. But again not into the beans. Or the grind. Or the method. Maybe one day.

When I use my little Nespresso pod machine, I “fake” a pre-soak by running a few seconds, pausing, then running a cycle again. I think it helps.

I’m sure it makes some difference when you are grinding it. I’m sure someone could make me an amazing cup. And explain the nuance and… That would be fun. The definition of “cup” used in each is different. Manual for the two states that one is 1.8L, other is around 1.5L, so almost the same machine. Difference is mostly just in the display/buttons.

We have well water that will destroy any electric drip coffee maker in a short order. I use a manual drip coffee maker from the 1930s called a drip o later. I also have a 1979 mr coffee non-electric. Look them up.
