@dahobbs9 I have an older RoboRock and the lidar is really good…works in dark rooms so u don’t have to turn on all the lights in the house for it to vacuum.
I have zero confidence that these things can do a quality job on the three very different surfaces we have downstairs, ceramic tile, synthetic laminate flooring, and several large rugs…but I really came here to say that the write up made me LOL. My wife asked me, from the other room, what was so funny!
WOW!

WTaF!! When did you start pre-shipping to Canada??
Can we please stop with the naked women in the meh product depictions? The Kiss didn’t have naked women in it. In fact, both people are almost completely covered. Looks like AI is using the browser history of whomever is in charge of generating these images. Enough already.
@ERFemale
I don’t generally look through all the pictures unless it’s actually a product I’m interested in. Agreed, seems weird that is happening now.
PS… do you work in an ER?
@chienfou I get the daily email that has the generated photo as a hint of what they are selling. Yes, I do work in the ED. The username is what our old electronic medical record assigned anonymous female patients usually with a number at the end.
@ERFemale I hear your concern and I’m going to see what’s feasible to avoid using without keeping as much of a variety of art as possible.
For the record, the previous one was not The Kiss, it was The Three Ages of Woman (avoid clicking if you’d rather not see Gustav Klimt painted nudity).
@dave thanks for educating me! I’m not anti boob, but where are the penises? Let’s be diverse and equal opportunity in our exploration of nudity to sell products.
I have the current Costco version of this Roborock and I love it. I’ve had it for ~3 months and it’s my second Roborock (lived for 8 years). It classifies floor types so even on the first run it won’t accidentally mop your carpet. The mop works surprisingly well (same style in this version as current version) - I still have to mop just like you still have to vacuum if you have carpet, but definitely not as frequently. Roborock’s obstacle avoidance is fantastic, successfully avoiding cables and some dog poop from a pet accident.
The biggest difference for me in this version versus the current is the design of the vacuum brush - the newer version is split in the center, meaning long hair (person and dog) is actually funneled into the vac chamber and I no longer have to occasionally flip it and cut dog hair off the roller. If you have a long haired pet I’d say pass on this but keep an eye out for discounts on the newer version! My only other gripe is the vac bags are smallish and the dock doesn’t alert you when it’s full so my only heads up are when it starts leaving little vacuum-packed furballs behind it during a cycle.
@kg714x I’m going to do a sweep through the historical art archives and try to remove ones with nudity. Unsurprisingly that’ll likely remove a lot of our options but it’s worth doing if it’s causing problems.
Since we’re looking at the classic showdown of Ecovacs vs. Roborock (between here and Morningsave), let me weigh in with a comment / complaint. Last summer, I bought the same Ecovacs Deebot Neo+ on a meh deal. I’m a long time owner of two older Roborock S6. The S6 does not have much mopping functionality, it just drags a wet pad around the floor, I was excited by the Deebot’s scrubber. That works, actually quite well, everything else about it is mediocre, to the point of being barely usable.
Every time the Ecovac reboots, weirdly quite often, it apparently randomly picks from one of its saved maps. In order to change the map, the only way I’ve found is to put it in the center of the kitchen, close the door about 3/4 of the way, and start it. Probably this would be easier if I used the app, so I’ll take some credit, but I have a deep allergy to apps and the underlying issue is still Ecovacs’s.
The self-empty function on the Ecovacs simply doesn’t work for me, at all. And it’s amazingly, astonishingly loud. It’s funny to use to startle the cats, but not for much else. Perhaps that’s the same with the Roborock, my S6 doesn’t have a fancy dock.
However, the killer is, unlike the Roborock, the Ecovacs remembers when a door was closed last time it worked. This sounds like a good thing, until you try to run it the next time and it decides that it’s impossible to get into the kitchen/bedroom/whatever. I haven’t found a quick way to work around this, other than to open the requisite door and tell it to clean the room outside of the door, so it can update its map. If you pick it up and move it, it gets entirely lost and starts remapping, not a problem with the Roborock.
So anyway, if I could go back in time I’d buy this one, not the Ecovacs. At least it’s a known quantity.
The one nice thing I’ll say about Ecovacs: Their robot software is insecure, that you can trick it into running from a local server (https://github.com/bmartin5692/bumper). It’s not perfect, but it’s nice to have smart gadgets with a high-fidelity map of my house which doesn’t send that to the cloud.

Arrgggh. I just recently bought a new robot vacuum.
Can it make a margarita: You want it to clean your floors, then clean itself, then empty itself, then refill itself, and make you a margarita?!
if it did that, I could have saved $3500 a month in alimony.
Oh my gods, boobies!! (Last pic lol)
@PooltoyWolf Funny write up and boobies! They’re going to start charging us to shop here!
@PooltoyWolf
Thanks for pointing that out; I hadn’t noticed.
I don’t think the bot will let us do that.

@mediocrebot Thought so.

@mediocrebot @PooltoyWolf
Not two, but THREE bare boobies!
But don’t you have to empty the trash/dirt from the dock?
@Barc777
No… You buy several and trash the whole set-up!
Wonder if it’s got Lidar or does it Watch where it’s going
@dahobbs9 the spec says “PreciSense LiDAR Smart Mapping”
@dahobbs9 I have an older RoboRock and the lidar is really good…works in dark rooms so u don’t have to turn on all the lights in the house for it to vacuum.
@dahobbs9 @shawn_mitch I thought “LiDAR” was a spoof acronym for fake lidar, but the upper/lower case combo is used for real lidar.
Does it serve coffee or bring you your beer?! It’s gotta do something whenever it doesn’t suck anymore
The only good use for a Roomba:
@MrGoodGuy what is this DJ Roomba erasure?
I have zero confidence that these things can do a quality job on the three very different surfaces we have downstairs, ceramic tile, synthetic laminate flooring, and several large rugs…but I really came here to say that the write up made me LOL. @lomerson2
PROVE IT!
(mediocre totally did not pay me to say this to challenge your ego into burning $230 on a questionably performant product)
@cfg83
As much as I like my roomba, I don’t see the need to kneel at it’s throne.
@cfg83 I had that thought too!
@cfg83 @Kyeh Same.

I bought the Shark Matrix 2-in-one here a couple of weeks ago under $100. I’m impressed with it. Is this current offering worth the extra money?

@chienfou That is impressive, but I think the roborock is hiding in the house. Look at how dirty it is outside?!?!?

@ERFemale
Cool. I’m a “retired” ER nurse/ex-EMT. Still do 3-4 shifts a month PRN at the local ER.
@chienfou oh nice! I was also an EMT once upon a time. The ER has changed so much since I started… and not for the better.
@dave thanks for educating me! I’m not anti boob, but where are the penises? Let’s be diverse and equal opportunity in our exploration of nudity to sell products.
@ERFemale Ah, I went ahead and removed as many of the art pieces with nudity that I could find (though I can’t be certain I caught everything).
@ERFemale

@rambopandabear Ok, the Costco stamp of approval is a good sign. No easy Costco returns, though.
NSFW tag next time there’s nudity, please @meh.com.
Some of us still have real jobs!

Hmm. Either I don’t know how to use this or I don’t pay Meh enough!

Here’s what Gemini had to say.
@Sompom Oh, I just didn’t wait long enough for the bot. Well, now we have two amazing posters.
