Fermentation involves yeast or something yeast-adjacent. Mold rots things. This will probably appeal to people who think kombucha is nifty. I am not any of those people.
@wdkrebs I am conversant with those realities, and I do not eat aged cheeses as a result. (They taste vile.) I’m not 100% down with yogurt. Cream cheese is okay. So are many of the fresh white cheeses. But not feta, ugh, no.
Allergy to rice. Severe allergy to mold on fermented food. So no. I haven’t seen too many foods sold on MEH that are safe for me except the a few flavors of Love, Corn a few years ago. And some dairy free chocolate bars that are very tasty. I need a drink. No, wait. I can’t drink anything because I’m allergic to everything but pure potato vodka. I hate the taste of vodka so I have to face each day without taking the edge off. Yea.
@mehmef I used to be allergic to grass and pollen, but I mowed the lawn so many times I overpowered it. Now, my nose stays completely clear. So, uhm, power through? You’ll get em?
@gwrankin That’s great that you were able to get past your grass allergy. I don’t like going to the emergency room with anaphylaxis reactions so I don’t buy food I can’t eat so more for those who can eat the stuff.
Hmm, kinda iffy because of the fermentation etc and $24 is a bit spendy just to try something out that might be promising. Also $24 / 40oz = $9.6/lb which isn’t that appealing. What I -really- miss is Kind fruit bars but they apparently don’t make those any more. The Kind chocolate granola was also pretty good.
@visioneer_one Here’s the image you requested for “anime style Gordon Ramsay holding a bag of San-J Premium Koji Granola while screaming “ITS ROTTEN!””
@visioneer_one I can recommend avoiding any attempt to discover how the ancient Roman condiment “garum” is made. (And from various reports, I think it’s safe to recommend against trying the modern recreations of it.)
@chienfou Different types of aspergillus are used for fermented food stuffs. Japan has been using koji for 1300 years. Possibly longer. Wouldn’t have miso, sake, soy sauce, etc. without these little aspergillus guys. Fermentation really is fascinating (and safe).
@bakerzdosen@PolloLoco
Even a “bad” aspergillus is not a problem for most people. Just makes my brain light up when I see that name… (occupational hazard)
@bakerzdosen I feel you. It’s typos and stylization (in business communication and the like) that gets my brain lit up. (tech writer) Totally not the same, but you know. Ha.
@bakerzdosen@PolloLoco
Hey some of my best friends were tech writers! I did part-time duty through the years since I did a lot of customer support and training classes for tech equipment.
So, tech writer question: you got 1 big thing made up of 3 other things. Do you say the big thing comprises 3 things, or is comprised by (or of) 3 things?
@bakerzdosen@pmarin haha! Good one. Akschewly, I wouldn’t use either. We keep it as simple as possible for translation and ease of comprehension for nonnative Englishers.
“Three hard drives make one array.” Something like that.
@ArmchairGamer@mediocrebot our friends here change the bot to Halloween-themed names this season.
But maybe that person died by Aspergillus!
Whatever that is…
Have you seen the price of granola in the stores? This is a steal, STEAL I tell you! I’ve enjoyed enough sake, soy sauce, cheese and penicillin to not be scared off by a little mold (not generally at the same time mind you).
@caalsio@Pitmonkey
BBD probably not a big issue here. I’ve arranged for a taker for part of the order. Will not charge, but trade for Kimchi (also fermented!)
Since I think this does NOT contain nuts, it’s less likely to get “old” quickly. I often have no problem with slightly-expired foods, as often sold with near-dates here.
The great liberal state of California (and I firmly believe should NOT be nuked) is apparently banning BBD dates on many shelf-stable foods because so much good food was thrown in dumpsters while food banks were needing food to distribute which should be fine.
@Pitmonkey@pmarin You’ll have to smuggle your own. Hospitals almost never supply useful condiments. Or food that has seasonings. Or food worth eating, for that matter.
@cbatte@gafisher@phendrick Ergot is damage from a mold that infests many grain crops, and can leave a nasty toxin. It has caused animal feed recalls relatively recently, and is among the things that USDA testing is supposed to detect and keep out of the food stream. Unfortunately, a whole bunch of that testing capability has been defunded.
@gafisher@phendrick@werehatrack Oddly enough I’m actually listening to an audiobook that references the Salem witch trials and possible ergot poisoning contributions, so clearly my goat subconscious decided to bring back 17th-century agricultural panic for Halloween. I suppose I am at fault for the mold but I’m not sure I am ready to accept blame for the defunded grain tests.
@cbatte@gafisher@werehatrack
Shouldn’t the eGoat be the official taster of Meh “foods”?
/showme the newspaper headline, “Meh eGoat defeats Meh ergot”, with goat standing to side stating “It’s a filling job, but someone has to do it. Burp.”
Ok, at first I was like ‘too much $$.’ However, the naysayers have all convinced me with their whining, “oh noes, it’s moldy!”
Ever hear of this thing called “bread?” Stores even sell stuff called “wine” and peddle poisonous “vinegar,” and these horrible people at a bar sell “beer!” Someone should call RFK and have him remove these blights on society! Actually, no, don’t. He just might try to outlaw bread, beer, and vinegar.
@user27549550 Bread, beer and wine are made using yeast (broadly, don’t get me started on “sourdough”). Vinegar involves a different culture, and it’s pretty specific; there are a number of other microbes that will scarf down ethanol and leave you with nothing useful at all. (In other words, if you need to turn wine into vinegar, you really need a true vinegar starter.)
I checked with my local friend I call our fermenter-in-Chief. She makes artisan Kimchi. She knew about Koji and will take a few bags. No fee necessary but might trade for Kimchi!
So…

I’ve been wanting to try some of the probiotic sodas that seem to be trendy at the moment. But the “spend money waste weird food” fear is stopping me. Just like with this granola. Can i just have a taste of yours?
@walarney
If you want intro-to-probiotics 101, just start with yogurt or kefir that “contains live and active cultures,” then sauerkraut and kimchi. The sauerkraut has to be fresh and refrigerated, not the pasteurized canned one because it has been “killed.”
You don’t need to go to commercial supplements, at least not right away.
@pmarin@walarney But for the love of your olfactory senses, do not try making your own sauerkraut at home. You really do not want to know what that smells like. Just buy it. Trust me on this.
I’m reasonably convinced this contains no probiotics - it’s cooked and dried, so any live organism should be dead. Not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
It might contain prebiotics and postbiotics though.

@jacksown It will now!
Looks kinder than Kind.
Fermentation involves yeast or something yeast-adjacent. Mold rots things. This will probably appeal to people who think kombucha is nifty. I am not any of those people.
@werehatrack Wait until you learn about cheese!
@wdkrebs I am conversant with those realities, and I do not eat aged cheeses as a result. (They taste vile.) I’m not 100% down with yogurt. Cream cheese is okay. So are many of the fresh white cheeses. But not feta, ugh, no.
@wdkrebs @werehatrack
As the French would say:
les goûts et les couleurs on ne discute pas
Can it make a margarita: No, but it could maybe rim the glass of a truly weird margarita
we really need to have a serious talk about margaritas before an intervention is necessary.
I love trying new foods and I’m into healthy stuff but if I don’t like it, nobody will take it from me and I hate to waste.
Allergy to rice. Severe allergy to mold on fermented food. So no. I haven’t seen too many foods sold on MEH that are safe for me except the a few flavors of Love, Corn a few years ago. @gwrankin Mileage may vary on both safety and effectiveness of this approach.
@gwrankin That’s great that you were able to get past your grass allergy. I don’t like going to the emergency room with anaphylaxis reactions so I don’t buy food I can’t eat so more for those who can eat the stuff.
@gwrankin @werehatrack It’s been working for me for many years. No reactions have required an ER visit for 20 years.

@phr 60oz total here, so $6.40/lb
@phr I’ve been pretty happy with most of the Kind stuff.
This has that one in every ten bags is a WINNER vibe but what you win is regret.
From the image I was expecting a pumpkin spice option…
@ergomeh very glad this is NOT that!
Like Fall, but hate pumpkin spice flavor!
@ergomeh @pmarin what about pumpkin flavor?
I was part of one of those back in my college days.

I was much more typically in the “baked” group.

Summary: Deal with it or don’t buy.

@Sorry_Nothing yep way too $$$$, especially for someone on a limited budget/ income
@mycya4me @Sorry_Nothing I don’t believe anyone who shops online has an unlimited budget/ income.
Bring back the UNFERMENTED Chips Ahoy cookies!
If this had been 19.99 i would have tried it. For what can only be called dumb reason 25$ is a knee jerk “No thank you”.
@deenK got to agree with you there
Sorry, my ER nurse brain can’t get past aspergillus.
Hope San-J has a good health plan for their workers.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nice. Way to dodge a bullet!
@PolloLoco
I definitely agree with you. I make fermented hot sauces on a regular basis.
@chienfou yes! I’ve dabbled here or there with fermentation too. Kimchi, sauerkraut, yogurt, sourdough, beer. Yum.
@PolloLoco
Kimchi is on my punch list one of these days. The others I have done and still do… some more frequently than others.
Sure, why not?

@Pitmonkey
My wife likes a nut-based granola and it’s way more $/lb than this. But contains expensive nuts, not moldy rice!
I need to check with my fermenting-friendly friend (makes Kimchi!) about this product.
@Pitmonkey I wanna get these but 6 bags is just a lot of granola. I will not eat it all before the BBD.

@Guipo I’m sure they prefer “artisanally aged for peak experience.”
Looks like it was cored and baked to me.
@Blats “cored and baked?”
So that’s what you kids call it these days?
I’ve had moldy granola before. Watch out for the ergot.
@gafisher “ergot”? Is that EGOT + Rockstar award? Or were you referencing the October goat,@cbatte and typoed?
@cbatte @gafisher @phendrick
I was trying to come up with an Egot thing but you beat me!
@cbatte @gafisher @phendrick Ergot is damage from a mold that infests many grain crops, and can leave a nasty toxin.
