A bargain if it lasts long enough to deliver 4500 gallons (and your electricity is free)
0Want a source of distilled water that you don’t have to fill from the tap? Hammacher-Schlemmer has you covered. For just $4699.00, you can get a standalone dehumidifier that stores and dispenses chilled drinking water extracted from the air. After just 4500 gallons (about 18,000 typical bottles), it will have paid for itself! (Don’t ask how many hours of runtime are involved.)

This assumes that four 16.9 oz bottles of water cost around $1.15, with some rounding for the sake of simplicity. Also, the cost of the electricity is not factored in. The specs say that it can produce “up to” about 2.5 gallons of water per day, so if you can afford to have someone emptying it every few hours, your break-even point is about five years down the road.
Such a deal! And you can use your own drink containers, so there’s less plastic waste! Order now, while there’s still stock on hand!
Hate to bust your bubble, but this does not render “distilled water”.
@chienfou After reading farther into the specs, yeah, they intentionally recontaminate the water with minerals. Bummer. They came so close to something useful, and then embraced the woo instead.
@werehatrack
Condensation ≠ distilled water…
@chienfou @werehatrack
Of course, condensation is all about exhibiting an attitude of superiority.
People are so silly, right?
@cfg83
Sorry if I offended… It was meant as a word of caution. Some items “require” distilled water.
@chienfou @werehatrack
My reverse-osmosis system has an add-on re-mineralizer that does exactly that. And raises pH so it is supposed to be more like the trendy bottled “alkaline waters.”
But yes I remember from chemistry class, some things you absolutely needed true distilled water.
@chienfou No offense, I was making a pro-nun-see-ayy-shun joke of condensation versus condescending in the grand style of …
@cfg83
Wow. This won’t work, but …
/showme Luke Skywalker at moisture farm with Atmospheric Water Collector labelled Hammacher-Schlemmer .
Something went terribly wrong. Please try again.
@cfg83 And now I have to wonder if these are Uncle Owen Approved, and whether Threepio could program them.
@werehatrack
I would be verrrry impressed if Threepio could speak Hammacher-Schlemmernese.
I mean. Where this sort of thing is usually needed/useful would be where desalination plants are and have to be cheaper to run at industrial scale with solar.
Never mind my ground water is better. I don’t even bother collecting the dehumidifiers water for radiator fluid changes usually .
In theory you could live somewhere. Say an island. With no good groundwater. And lots of sun. And moisture. You know. Like a petulant billionaire while you wait to kill the rest of us off.
So you get repopulate with your inbred bastards. As one does. Then die when there are no engineers to do the work you claim
@unksol
The petulant billionaire would no doubt find all that to be cheaper and more comfortable that immigrating to Mars I suppose.
@f00l honestly I’m all for it let’s put the them all on the first rocket to mars. They’ll be happier. The earth could be saved. Good plan.
We put a man on the moon. We can absolutely eject a few billionaires in the direction of mars. Learn some stuff . They like experimenting with peoples lives.
@f00l @unksol yeah I’m mixed on the whole thing. Elon is creepy as F, but he is right ; it needs to be done. If you read/listen to a biography on him it makes a bit more sense.
For the record I have 2 Teslas. The quality has been amazing. On the newest one even more things are motorized and just work. After a long drive across the country, just discovered now I have power lumbar support with back/forth and up/down control. (Insert TWSS joke here)
Speaking of that, all the Tesla service have been very young, knowledgeable, attractive, and eager for their future! Same when I watch SpaceX launches.
My opinion is that they are all hoping for the trip to Mars with nothing to do for a few long months but procreate with their chosen, (or assigned) partner(s)?
@pmarin @unksol
And then, after that, I presume all the Tesla and SpaceX employees will want to stay mostly home and take care of the newly created children for 20 or so years.
Because I can’t imagine the relationship partners would want to be the childcare people; so I presume the Tesla & SpaceX employees will be doing that.
Or is the child care supposed to be done by some “new-new” Mars-based childcare robotics firm?
@f00l @pmarin it was fine when he wanted to build rockets and burn private money. The whole oligarchy he pivoted too . Yea no.
Maybe he wanted to go once then had to talk to wn actual scientist and panicked. And pivitoted to shit AI and media control. He definitely is going to kill us if he can. If for no other reason than he does not think anyone matters
@f00l @pmarin @unksol Current medical data suggests that fertility will be one of the things that doesn’t survive the journey to Mars, if the travelers don’t succumb entirely. We know what the gross effects of getting past LEO for less than two weeks looks like, and an extrapolation from that looks pretty damn dire. Lifting enough mass to provide effective shielding for the habitat module is probably never going to be in-budget, so I’m 99% certain that we won’t send people to Mars in this century. Lots of automata, yes, but people? Not a chance. And we’re going to need a hell of a big improvement in remote and autonomous construction capability before we can build a long term human-safe habitat on the lunar surface. That task is possible with current knowledge and feasible tech development. I doubt that we’ll be the ones doing it.
@f00l @pmarin @werehatrack I mean I didn’t say it had to be human safe. Or that them reproducing would be desirable. Really anywhere. All I said was it they want off this very large very successful space ship. For a dead one. I’ll help get them off of my space ship so we can start repairs
@f00l @pmarin @unksol Frankly, I’m of the opinion that if we can send one billionaire to space for a few minutes, we should send all of them for as long as possible. Maybe a sightseeing flyby of Callisto.
So it claims it condenses, then heats and distills, then filters and UV sterilizes. It’s also hepa filtering the air it pulls in to condense I’m assuming.
Ok, most dehumidifiers as far as I know produce pretty nasty water due to stuff in the air, so at least part of that would be necessary, but it seems if it’s actually doing all that at least part of it is redundant. Got to use lots of power.
Looks like it’s https://www.karawater.com/products/kara-pure-2
Standard mode 588 watts so 423.36 kWh a month.
That 4 months on the water filter is around 300 gallons. $129 to replace the water filter set. So that’s around $0.43 per gallon just in water filters, $50 for the air filter, another $0.06 per gallon.
On power that would be 14.112 kWh a day, 5.6448 a gallon. on the US average 18.31 cents a kWh that’s $1.03 a gallon.
Add it up, and it would average $1.52 a gallon, in power and filters.
That 4500 gallons is costing $6840 in basic operating costs. Not only are you never breaking even, you don’t even break even if you got the machine for free based on the post’s numbers.
Even if your power was free forever, filters on top of the price would push the break even to around 8500 gallons.
Over 9 years.
@kevinrs
Yeah and how much to repair a wonky touchscreen or replace the motherboard (assuming parts available) or whatever else?
And how much telemetry/personal data will go to the big data companies each day?
Kinda ugh!
