I just start with a very simple base of an equal amount of oats, usually a mixture of Bob’s Red Mill extra thick and Trader Joe’s toasted, milk of choice, I use Fairlife 2%, and Greek yogurt, I use Fage low lactose 2%, and a heaping spoonful of chia seeds per cup of oats, spices, Fruit of choice, protein powder if you want to add it I do a little bit for texture. It comes out nice and thick and not too chewy but has a lot of good texture to it. I like specifically to do blueberries with a fair amount of cinnamon and a cinnamon banana protein powder that I found at Sprouts
@Cerridwyn Mine is 32g of oats, about 20g of rice protein powder, a teaspoon of dried currants, a few shakes of pie spice, some Mexican vanilla, a shake of salt, and a squirt of sweetener. Mix the drys, add the vanilla and sweetener, add 165g of whole milk, stir thoroughly, and nuke for 7 minutes at 40%. If I have fresh blueberries, I’ll throw in about a bit under a quarter cup of them before cooking.
@werehatrack because of where I live fresh blueberries are almost always here. I have taken to using vanilla powder. It’s basically the second rate vanilla beans ground up. I add it to Coffee sometimes when it’s Brewing so you get that vanilla flavor that can really tap down coffee that’s not as great as what you like.
This is the protein powder I’ve taken to using more often than anything else. If I’m using unflavored I usually just use Bob’s but I like their vanilla chai and the banana cinnamon a lot. I wish their chocolate was richer
@Cerridwyn
I like my oatmeal hot, usually when the weather gets chilly. @werehatrack
Sounds like how I make mine, but doesn’t cooking them kind of negate the overnight process?
@Cerridwyn@chienfou@werehatrack I only like cooked oatmeal - the overnight stuff tastes chalky to me. I know people say it’s great with the right kind of oats & so on, but I’m just going to cook them if I have them.
@chienfou@Kyeh@werehatrack I used to feel that way until I found a recipe for a s’mores one that I liked and branched out. It used those little mini hard marshmallows that like coming cereal and then chocolate covered Graham crackers. It was quite tasty. My son-in-law Cooks up a big batch of them and then packages in the several smaller ones in the refrigerator and eats them cold. But he likes to use the real thick steel cut oats which don’t do really good is overnight oats. Scottish oats do okay Blended but not by themselves
@chienfou Letting them soak overnight before cooking provides a smoother result. I could probably cut the cook time when I do the soak, but I won’t do that (or leave it uncooked) because the oatmeal comes out runny. I like my oatmeal substantial, not soupy. Your mileage and tastes are pretty much guaranteed to vary.
Honestly, I hadn’t looked at any of the things about “overnight oats” at all, aside from seeing the topic pop up a lot, so I just assumed it was an improved pre-cooking step. Cold and runny is not how I want mine. Not gonna try it.
@werehatrack you are correct. The Englishman still says rocket and has to correct himself in restaurants for that very reason. He also still says courgette and aubergine as well.
My friend Mike had a problem with a headlight on his 280Z sporty car. At the time, Kurt, who is an auto mechanic, was visiting from New Zealand and I arrange for him to take a look at Mike’s car.
Kurt lifted the hood and took a look, then turned to me and asked “Do you have a torch?” (meaning “flashlight”).
Mike’s reaction was priceless…
Weekdays I like to stop at a locally owned convenience store and get their jalapeno biscuits and gravy. On weekends I like to go to a little cafe called Roger’s that has several great options for breakfast. If I stay home I usually fry up some of our chicken and/or duck eggs and bacon.
My abnormal breakfast is a bowl of cereal (I have mixed about 4-5 different types of cereals in a container) or maybe a bowl of Grits (especially on Tuesday) other days I could also get some oatmeal. I follow it up with a toaster pastry.
@mycya4me grits Tuesday! I became addicted to grits while stationed in the panhandle of Florida; otherwise known as LA (Lower Alabama) I did commit what some might call a crime by adding a pat of butter and some maple syrup to my grits. Love me some grits!
@accelerator Crime, maybe I should report you to the GOAT. The only way I eat my Grits is plain, then I add butter ONLY.
Any way you want you can do Grits! I am just simple.
the reason I do grits on Tue. it is easy & & have a Virtual Breakfast Photo group. We been together before Covid. But Zoom kept us together, now 3 of the group moved out the the area, two out of State, the other 50 miles into another city. But most the time we talk about everything else instead of Photo.
@accelerator@mycya4me Tag, I’m it, and apparently I’m guilty of breakfast treason! Putting syrup on grits is a wild confession, @accelerator, but as October’s goat, I will gladly bear the shame on your behalf. @mycya4me, stay strong with your butter purism—I’ll take the fall for all the morning blasphemy!
@cbatte@mycya4me in Okaloosa County it is a misdemeanor to put syrup on and-or in grits. It’s not usually enforced unless it occurred in the commitment of another crime, like eating bacon with a fork. I was born under a bad sign and have always taken the road less traveled but, I have never eaten bacon with a fork.
@accelerator@cbatte@mycya4me should be a crime in any county. I’m all for sweet and savory but sweet grits. Nope. Big no pity nope nope nope. I make grits with cheddar and apple so you get a hint of sweetness but maple syrup.
@accelerator@cbatte@mycya4me@sillyheathen
Grits +
Butter
Cheese
Bacon
Hot sauce
Sauteed onions
Shrimp
Singularly or any of multiple combinations.
Maple syrup (even the good stuff… I’m with SH on that one. Nope, no, non, nicht, nein, nah, negatory. Just NO!
But, hey @accelerator… you do you. No one assigned me to the food police!
@cbatte@f00l@mycya4me I’ve been known to place strips of bacon on a plate with paper towels, microwave with a generous sprinkle of brown sugar on top, and served on top of a bowl of buttery grits; yes with pure maple syrup mixed in. Sugar is part of a great breakfast for me and really sets the tone for the rest of the day. Of course bacon is the star of the show and with sugar baked into the bacon grease you just can’t go wrong.
@werehatrack Try cream of wheat. It is some what like it!.
Grits are a Southern Dish.
I am from the South, I just might loose my southern card if I did not like them!
@accelerator@cbatte@sillyheathen Yep some do some were things with what they add to Grits… For me I do 2 packs of instant/ Plain with some butter… you get to eat it faster.
@accelerator@cbatte For what’s it worth, well to each their own… if they want to commit all the morning blasphemy… Hey they are eating it, NOT Me!
Just two packs Instant plain, then I JUST add butter… it already has salt.
@mycya4me I had lots of Cream of Wheat when I was a kid; my mother made it fairly often. I think there’s still a prepacked single-serve microwave version available that multiplies the cost per serving and adds a load of US-customary sugar. I should prefer starting from plain, TYVM.
@mycya4me@werehatrack You can still get boxes of the original kind, and Bob’s Red Mill has a version of their own, which might be better. I always preferred Cream of Wheat to oatmeal, as a kid. I also liked Malt-o-Meal.
@Kyeh@werehatrack In my area You only 2 choices of instant grits: Quaker Oats or still a few (Fool Lion & Wal-Mart) The large Kroger company (many brands under one large corp. Name)
Yes, I love the Malt-o-Meal bagged cereals,(yes I prefer the store brand to the National Brands) I now try to stay away from the Kiddy/ Sugarey Kid stuff. Buy many boxes/ bags & combine them in a container & shake it up so I have a good mix.
Yes I prefer grits to Oatmeal… But sometime you need to eat Oatmeal instead of Grits or Cereal.
@werehatrack I agree. But most of the time, to save time I will use 2 pacs of the pre-packed single-serve microwave version, Just add water & a little Country Crock - Lite. Nothing else. Yes I grew to love them as a Kid.
Now off breakfast, that has NOT changed much either. It is PB & … But Now it is whole wheat & Natural PB- Jif creamy.

Some days it’s yogurt or cottage cheese with fresh fruit and some granola. Some days it’s pancakes/waffles/crêpes. Toasted bagel with toppings (either cinnamon-raisin bagel with peanut butter or “everything” bagel with some combination of cheese, tomato and/or avocado). Occasionally (if I feel ambitious) I will have eggs just for a change.
And of course, coffee (black).
@sillyheathen I have their bottles around the fridge as well, but it’s their protein coffee that works wonders for me.
I’m usually too nauseous to eat in the mornings, but I need to get something down, and this solves that pretty nicely. 25g of protein per serving isn’t half bad.
@Thumperchick my favorite morning routine when I lift is overnight oats before and a protein shake after. I never did try their protein coffee. Maybe I’ll have to give it a gander.
I skip breakfast most of the time but I’m trying to change that. Right now I’m having toast with chunky peanut butter topped with a sliced banana. Avocado toast is okay too. A big hearty breakfast with bacon & eggs or eggs Benedict are delicious but my stomach can’t handle it so I have to eat those things for dinner.
@Kyeh same. I can’t do big breakfasts every day. And if you’re a peanut butter lover, try out one trick pony. It’s not as sweet as most us brands and it reminds me of fresh roasted peanuts from fairs etc. I used it in a curry recently and it was fantastic.

Overnight oats and a hard boiled egg with bacon or sausage
@Cerridwyn I do love the overnight oats!
@Cerridwyn yes I have tried overnight oats. I got two packs in one of the MEH gifts
exchanges.
@Cerridwyn I’m a DIY overnight oats type. I can haz recipe.
@werehatrack

Full English sans black pudding unless it’s made in house or eggs Benedict with arugula. These are a few of my favorite things.
@sillyheathen Not in the song…
/youtube Julie Andrew’s my favorite things
@phendrick @sillyheathen

Fun fact… The von Trapp family eventually settled in VT near Stowe… Family still runs a lodge and brewery there.
@chienfou @sillyheathen I know, I’ve been there.
@phendrick the song is WRONG! Julie should know better. I’m going to blame it on ingredient sourcing during WWII.
@sillyheathen
I did a custom mug for someone in our meh. exchange with custom lyrics from that song…
@sillyheathen If you’re being authentically English, then it’s eggs Benedict with rocket, not arugula. [g,d&r]
I have absolutely no idea why the name difference exists. I don’t think that Lost in the Pond has covered this one, but Sorted Food did.
@werehatrack you are correct. The Englishman still says rocket and has to correct himself in restaurants for that very reason. He also still says courgette and aubergine as well.
@sillyheathen
Those I knew, but rocket is not familiar.

Both. Bacon, eggs, potatoes, biscuits, cinnamon rolls, pancakes, coffee, juice…

@mycya4me @werehatrack I was thinking of Malt-o-Meal hot cereal
@Kyeh @werehatrack I have not see that on the east coast. I have seen/ Buy MOM bagged cold cereal.
@Kyeh @mycya4me @werehatrack
Winners warm up with Malt-O-Meal!
@Kyeh @mycya4me
The hot cereal was the original Malt-O-Meal product. The dry (cold) cereal came much later.
@chienfou @Kyeh I did Not know that as my store that I shop at did not carry original Malt-O-Meal product.
@Kyeh @macromeh @werehatrack I never saw that. Yes I know I am a Winner, as I eat MOM dry cereal & I eat GRITS! yum!
@Kyeh @mycya4me
I think on the whole original MoM is losing popularity.
@chienfou @Kyeh @mycya4me where can I find some Raisin Nut Bran (it’s almost like it’s become a Target exclusive)
@chienfou @mycya4me @pakopako Around here I see it’s carried at Safeway, King Soopers & Walmart.
@Kyeh @mycya4me @pakopako
Likewise listed as being on the shelf at my local Walmart. (Which I laughingly call Small-mart as it’s a TINY “super Walmart”.)

@chienfou @mycya4me @pakopako King Soops is owned by Kroger, so I think they have most of the same stuff.
@chienfou @Kyeh @pakopako I know they are own by Kroger. But I do think there are regional thing they may/ May not carry.

Contrary to broad colloquial wisdom, I typically do not eat breakfast, unless it’s being served for dinner.
@jitc Breakfast for dinner (or late night random meal) is why Denny’s and Waffle House exist.
Toasted bagel with toppings (either cinnamon-raisin bagel with peanut butter or “everything” bagel with some combination of cheese, tomato and/or avocado). Occasionally (if I feel ambitious) I will have eggs just for a change.
And of course, coffee (black).
I am not a breakfast person
@BergyD

@Thumperchick I love jot! I stopped buying it after we bought an actual espresso machine but I still use the empty bottles to water my mossy poles!

@sillyheathen I have their bottles around the fridge as well, but it’s their protein coffee that works wonders for me.
I’m usually too nauseous to eat in the mornings, but I need to get something down, and this solves that pretty nicely. 25g of protein per serving isn’t half bad.

@Kyeh @sillyheathen

American Dream Nut Butters
Mail order only but
@Cerridwyn @Kyeh I got mine at Target. It worked out because our middle and her bestie earned a shopping trip and target was on the list. Part of that was that they had to get the jar of PB because I abhor shopping.

Made the kids donuts this morning.
@sillyheathen
Why weren’t you MY mom?
@chienfou @sillyheathen Yum!
My mom used to make wonderful raised donuts. She would make a big batch and then it was my job to distribute samplers to neighbors. And of course, a good supply for the family’s consumption.
I miss those days…
@macromeh @sillyheathen
When our kids were little, “making donuts” consisted of opening a roll of “wop” biscuits and using a shot glass to cut the center out before we dropped them in to deep fry them in oil. When they came out they were tossed in a bag with cinnamon sugar to coat them. Not exactly ‘made from scratch’ but still pretty damn tasty.
It’s been a long time since we’ve deep-fried anything in this household…
@chienfou @macromeh that’s how we made beignets when we went camping as a kid. Because Cajuns still eat like Cajuns no matter where we go.
