@catthegreat
My bad. Alabama Organ Center is now Legacy of HOPE…
What’s worse is I should know that since they changed the name seven years ago and I’ve had to deal with them at work since then. They were AOC for so long, I guess in my mind, I haven’t updated the moniker yet.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I consider myself to be well rounded, with many interests!
I enjoyed playing sports long ago and still enjoy staying in shape, but watch sports more than play now.
At the same time, I’ve always loved anything science related, and even taught for a few years.
I don’t like Sports. I was NOT a jock in grade school.
I was a Geeky/ Nerd (which was NOT kool) (Plus my dad was also NOT into sports/ watching.)
I love Science/ SciFI/ Computers/ Ham Radio. Photography. I saw a Shuttle launch. I have been to NASA HQ many times (great gift shop) Also a book shop of all the stuff they publish – FREE.
@mycya4me meh, I don’t think you have had to have been a jock to like sports while you were in grade school. I played sports in school but enjoyed science more and I don’t think I’m unique in saying that.
@njfan Yes I went to Homecoming games for a few years after Grade school. Only to see people I knew. It was not my thing. Yes I was one of those that got chosen last in PE class.
@unksol For me, baseball in it’s prime is a form of USA mythology. USA has no history to the degree of other nations. We don’t have ancient ruins going back 2000 years to fall back on.
However, in a perfect moment, we can take our kid to (hopefully) the same stadium where we saw Nolan Ryan throw his second no hitter. We can talk about his erratic power and 10 walks along the way, and we can describe the near hit where the ump might have got it wrong.
This may be true of other sports, but I feel like the extensive minor league system means baseball permeated the USA everywhere … in its prime.
@cfg83 perfectly valid. Not something we did as a kid although I seem to remember the silver hawks radio commercials. They changed their name a while ago it seems. Not sure how the whole minor league works.
The only things I remember sitting in the stands for as a kid was county fairs for like motorcycle races/truck pulls/demolition Derby. But we were there for the demolition derby.
Can’t put quiet the same historic spin on smashing old cars lol. But there are things I did as a kid that I’d like to do with my kids. Have an actual month off and go road tripping national parks.
Gotta watch that nostalgia bias though. Who needs national parks when we could have data centers /s
@cfg83@unksol Re: Soylent Green (1973 movie set in 2022, used as background for Radiohead video above)
Ya know, somehow I never even noticed the unruly crowds of people being scooped into garbage trucks - maybe I should get out more…
They are not mutually exclusive. Hell look at Moneyball. You can apply scientific methods to any aspect of life, including sports.
I think this is a poor rephrasing of Jock or Nerd? Which, semantically, has lost meaning with technobrodouchebags.
I loved sports. I love playing sports and contests with friends. Professional $ports? Fuck em.
Bottlegate. Cleveland OH. 2001. That is when the myth/aura of professional sports died. I am a Steelers fan, and watching that, I wanted to throw shit at my television. The most blatant “the rules say this… but” I have ever witnessed.
So anything since then… Trump getting FIFA to rescind a red card. Hell, FIFA moving the world cup to the winter. CFB series just picking big name teams and notre dame. It is all just . . . scripted fingers on the scales of the most profitable outcome. Every sport. Everywhere. No fail.
@KNmeh7 I mean it’s very clear the “technobrodouchebags” don’t care about anything but themselves. So. I weight their opinions on a logarithmic scale approaching zero.
Also all the corruption and profiteering in professional sports. Public money spent on stadiums and them taking the money from the building WE paid for
I do like (watching) sports, did like (playing) sports, but I how have a body that’s more suitable for science.
@phendrick
That’s where mine is destined to end up… AOC can part me out and send the rest to a med school.
@chienfou @phendrick ocasio-cortez is a zombie?
@catthegreat
Nope… Not doing there
@chienfou so then what’s AOC

I like baseball, but …
@cfg83 I hear baseball is just stats? Also time intensive. Very boring until something happens. Are you sure the answer is actually sports? Lol

@unksol
I hear that. Who needs a park when I can go watch film of a deer …
@unksol Oh! And I forgot. Aliens love baseball too.
@cfg83 appears to be some very uncanny AI slop? Yeah I’ll take reality please
@cfg83 @unksol
In some places there is history.

@macromeh @unksol Yeah, when you are scooped, try to be the last one in. It’s easier to breathe when you aren’t squished on the bottom.
@cfg83 @macromeh so you’re alive to be cooked?
@macromeh @unksol Rats, didn’t think of that. Where’s Kirk when I need him? …
@cfg83 @macromeh pretty sure it’s all down hill once you’ve been “scooped” regardless of the processing method
But… but… sports science!

@KNmeh7 @unksol plenty of people hold their noses but still enjoy watching sports.
@KNmeh7 @njfan also true. I will admit to never having really cared. Youth soccer was fun.
Sports can have value but man. This gambling shit being pushed is good for no actual person. Just the companies.
And many things might be better if people stopped holding their nose and demanded changes
